Ambitious books for kids

Little Nerd publishes educational books designed for preschoolers and early graders.

The books are packed with startling facts, written so young kids will laugh and learn. As will adults.

Bugs For Kids —
The Big ABC Book

Inside the book, you'll discover:

  • 26 common North American bugs, from ants to the zebra longwinged butterfly, one for each letter of the alphabet.

  • Facts relevant to kids, such as family, food, home, and quirky group names.

  • Five mind expanding fun facts for each insect! (Seriously, these animals are incredible!)

  • The names of the bugs’ cool body parts.

  • Over 200 vivid nature photos that will captivate kids of all ages.

  • 120 pages of high-quality content checked by entomologists.

2 year old boy standing on bridge looking at at the rails and a train coming closer

It all began with my boy's love for trains

When my son turned two, he was hooked on trains. I was soon surprised at how many words he was able to learn and how easily he differentiated between the different types of trains. I had figured a train was just a train... 🤷‍♀️

I had totally underestimated kids’ curiosity and capabilities.

Meanwhile, I felt like a terrible teacher, knowing close to nothing about trains. For instance, what are the stones and boards placed between the rails called? Or the cables? Are they simply called 'cables'?

Naturally, I turned to books.

But finding the right book proved challenging. As outlined below.

This pattern repeated itself with his new interests, such as cars, all sorts of vehicles, construction machines, dinosaurs, ocean animals (especially sharks), and at the age of five... bugs.

Tired of books talking down to young kids?

Finding the right book for my knowledge-thirsty preschoolers has always proved challenging.

The books for preschoolers often fell short in several ways:

  • They were too simplistic, offering little educational value.

  • They featured cute illustrations rather than realistic photos, which my kids prefer.

  • They were too short.

The books for older kids, weren't great for preschoolers (as expected).

  • They were too complex delving into abstract phenomena such as taxonomy or the workings of a steam engine.

  • The books often had too few images, or the illustrations were a bit too artsy.

  • The text passages were too lengthy.

So, I decided to create the books me and my children need ...

The Next Books are Under Construction

  • The next book in the Little Nerd series is already in the works. It’s about construction — mighty machines, trucks and vehicles — and it’s exactly the book I needed when my son was three!

  • The third book will be about horses and dedicated to my sweet four-year-old daughter, a horse lover, just like her mother.
